PMPC Star Awards 2011: ABS-CBN wins big
The 25th Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for TV was successfully held Tuesday evening at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. The event was hosted by Kapamilya hunk Piolo Pascual and beauty queen Shamcey Supsup.

ABS-CBN emerged as this year's big winner as it bagged 26 trophies, including "Best TV Station", for the third consecutive time. GMA-7, meanwhile, had 15 awards while TV 5 received six. Studio 23, UNTV 37, and NET 25 got three, two and one, respectively.

The PMPC also gave special recognition to Nora Aunor, German “Kuya Germs” Moreno, Jessica Soho and Susan Roces.

The event will have its telecast on ABS-CBN on Sunday, November 27, 2011.

Andi Eigenmann welcomes Baby Elli
Young actress Andi Eigenmann delivered her first baby via Caesarian section on Wednesday afternoon at St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City in The Fort, Taguig City.

The bouncing baby girl arrived at exactly 5:02 p.m. and weighed 7.8 pounds upon birth. According to Push, Andi named her Gabrielli Andrea whose nickname is "Elli". (Earlier reports said it's Adrianna Gabrielle.)

Andi is now nursing Baby Elli.

Guck will be the baby's last name, the real family name of Andi's mother Jaclyn Jose. Baby Elli's baptism is scheduled on Christmas Day, 2011.

While we’re still waiting to find out when exactly the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be released in the US by Verizon, we’ve got news on the handset’s availability in Australia.

MobiCity, one of Australia’s largest phone retailers, currently says that the Galaxy Nexus’ expected launch date is November 24 – although it looks like the first batch of devices will arrive a day earlier, on November 23 (this Wednesday). You have to pay $799 if you want to pre-order the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone from MobiCity right now.

Kogan, another Australian retailer, has priced the Galaxy Nexus at $799, too. However, Kogan expects to have the smartphone in stock only starting November 30.

For the moment, no Australian carrier has announced any intentions to offer the new Nexus on contract.

At school, Teacher Ji-sun overhears a curious exchange between Julien and Ha-sun when the latter returns an item he left in her room. Another red flag goes up when she runs into Ha-sun that evening near a neighborhood cobbler, with Julien’s shoes in hand. Flustered, Ha-sun lies that they’re her father’s and slips away.

But the pieces don’t quite match up in Ji-sun’s head: Ha-sun’s father was fairly short, Julien mentioned he needed his shoes fixed, and they talked about being careful not to get caught… Eureka! Something is definitely strange between the two. She warns Ha-sun, “Laugh while you can…” and vows to solve the puzzle between Ha-sun and Julien.

ROME (AP) — A smirking horned devil exists in the frescoed clouds of a Giotto work in the famed Assisi basilica, an Italian art historian said yesterday — a tantalizing detail that apparently went unnoticed by scholars for centuries.

The discovery was reported in the online edition of this month's issue of the Franciscan religious order publication San Francesco Patrono d'Italia.

Art historian Chiara Frugoni said she has spent almost 30 years studying the cycle of frescoes in the upper level of the Umbrian landmark church, but only recently spotted the image in what appears to be an empty space in a cloud.

The frescoes — in Assisi, in the central Italian province of Perugia — are by Giotto, a Fiorentine, whose narrative style and human-like figurative style marked an evolution in art in the late 13th century.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press on yesterday, Frugoni said she chanced on the image of the devil while trying to more precisely date a fresco depicting the death of St. Francis of Assisi. She has since concluded it was painted in 1289.

"It's very visible," she said, adding that the image had not previously come to attention because no one had been looking for it.

"One sees what you already know. I assure you that now all will see it," she said.

She described the detail to the publication as a "vigorous portrait of a devil with two dark horns" cleverly hidden in the swirling clouds near an angel, and said that the significance of its placement needs to be studied.

The Rev. Enzo Fortunato, a friar with the order, said that in medieval times it was commonly believed that at death two figures go into action — an angel to accompany the just into heaven; a devil to bring the damned into the depths of hell.

Fortunato said that by hiding the devil in the clouds, Giotto appears to have beaten by nearly two centuries a technique attributed to Andrea Mantegna, who in one painting shows a knight emerging from a cloud.

A strong earthquake in 1997 heavily damaged the basilica, and restorers took years to complete the restoration on some of the Cimabue and Giotto frescoes.

When an asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier makes its flyby near Earth Wednesday morning (Manila time), the weather will be clear enough for it to be seen, state astronomers said Tuesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also allayed fears that the asteroid, codenamed YU55, will hit the Earth with catastrophic results. "Ang alam ko hindi magiging maulap dahil maganda ang panahon, maaari nating makita [ang asteroid]," PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said in an interview on dzBB radio.

An article on UK's The Daily Mail said the asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, but amateur astronomers could see it "if they use a telescope at least 6 inches in diameter as it approaches from a sunward direction."

In the same radio interview, Enriquez dismissed doomsday scenarios as shown in movies, as she stressed YU55 will only pass by the Earth and will not crash into it. "Dadaan lang (ito), hindi tulad ng pinapanood natin [sa] sine. Hindi yan ia-allow ni Lord. Makikita lang natin ang kanyang kagandahan," she said.

The UK Daily Mail cited experts who calculated that if something of that size were to hit Earth, it would cause a 4,000 megaton blast, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, and if it hit water a 70-foot high tsunami would spread within 60 miles of the crash site.

The asteroid’s closest passage is expected at 5:28 p.m. CST (7:28 a.m. Manila time). Earlier, the National Space and Aeronautics Administration said asteroid YU55 will not hit Earth, and are making preparations to track it. "The trajectory of asteroid 2005 YU55 is well understood. At the point of closest approach, it will be no closer than 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers) or 0.85 the distance from the moon to Earth. The gravitational influence of the asteroid will have no detectable effect on anything here on Earth, including our planet's tides or tectonic plates," NASA said.

NASA said the last time a space rock as big came as close to Earth was in 1976, although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. It said the next known approach of an asteroid this large will be in 2028.

For the November flyby, NASA scientists will use antennas of its Deep Space Network at Goldstone, California, to track the asteroid. It said it will track the asteroid starting at 9:30 a.m. local time (PDT) on Nov. 4, using a massive 70-meter Deep Space Network antenna, for about two hours.

Goldstone will continue tracking the asteroid for at least four hours each day from Nov. 6 through Nov. 10. Radar observations from the Arecibo Planetary Radar Facility in Puerto Rico will begin on Nov. 8, the same day the asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth at 3:28 p.m. PST. "Although 2005 YU55 is in an orbit that regularly brings it to the vicinity of Earth (and Venus and Mars), the 2011 encounter with Earth is the closest this space rock has come for at least the last 200 years," NASA said.

NASA scientists hope to obtain images of the asteroid from Goldstone as fine as about 7 feet (2 meters) per pixel. This should reveal a wealth of detail about the asteroid's surface features, shape, dimensions and other physical properties. Arecibo radar observations of asteroid 2005 YU55 made in 2010 show it to be approximately spherical in shape.

It is slowly spinning, with a rotation period of about 18 hours. The asteroid's surface is darker than charcoal at optical wavelengths. "Amateur astronomers who want to get a glimpse at YU55 will need a telescope with an aperture of 6 inches (15 centimeters) or larger," NASA said.
